In early 2026, a delegation from our foundation again travelled to Osh to push forward our new project in the children’s hospital there. As soon as we arrived, it became clear that this visit would not only be important from an organisational perspective – we would also bedeeply moved by it. On the first day, we were able to sign the new cooperation agreement with the hospital management and hand over CHF 14 000 of urgently needed surgical instruments – a non-descript package, but one which could in the future make the difference between life and death.
The day-to-day clinical work carried out there once again highlighted the gravity of the situation: many children are suffering from severe congenital abnormalities that would be difficult to survive without specialist help. Surgeries on infants with intestinal malformations, a newborn with gastroschisis, critical situations without adequate monitoring technology – all this made us very aware of the importance of any form of support.
Structural deficits have also become apparent: a laboratory that needs large amounts of blood, a lack of monitoring equipment for the youngest children and limited technical equipment. Nevertheless, the Kyrgyz teams impressed us with their professionalism and unwavering commitment. In-depth discussions were held to plan the next steps – including internships in Germany in the areas of anaesthesia, surgery and neonatology as well as further visits by our delegations to Kyrgyzstan. Together, we want to ensure that the treatment of seriously ill children is continuously improved.
In spite of all the challenges, we experienced great warmth. This trip showed us once again why this project is so important: many of the children in Osh would not stand a chance without additional help. Every operation, every instrument, every piece of knowledge – it all saves lives. Our next visit is planned for 2027 – until then we will continue to work hard to give the children of Osh hope and a bright future.
